10004: Three Stooges Offend Catholic League.

Catholic League: ‘Three Stooges’ full of offensive nunsense

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

The Catholic League is in an uproar over the way nuns are depicted in Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s redo of “The Three Stooges,” which 20th Century Fox opens Friday domestically.

In a terse statement issued Thursday, Catholic League president Bill Donohue takes issue with a “nun bikini” and large rosary worn by swimsuit model Kate Upton in the slapstick comedy as well as with Larry David’s character.

David, like Upton, plays a nun in “Three Stooges,” and his character’s name is Sister Mary-Mengele—named after infamous Nazi Josef Mengele.

“In the 1950s, Hollywood generally avoided crude fare and was respectful of religion. Today it specializes in crudity and trashes Christianity, especially Catholicism,” Donohue said. “Enter ‘The Three Stooges.’ The movie is not just another remake: It is a cultural marker of sociological significance, and what it says about the way we’ve changed is not encouraging.”

Fox disagreed that Three Stooges diverges from the original series. “The movie, in keeping with the spirit of the original TV show and its stars, is a broad, slapstick comedy,” a Fox spokesperson said.

“As the Stooges have proved over time, laughter is a universal medicine. The nuns that Mr. Donohue alludes to, are in fact, caring, heroic characters in the movie, albeit within the framework of a very broad comedy,” the spokesperson continued. “And as far as the nun attire, I think we did the audience a favor by letting Kate Upton wear the nun-kini rather than Larry David—it could have gone either way. We invite you to see the movie and decide for yourselves.”

The Catholic League is the largest Catholic civil rights organization in the U.S.

Donohue also criticized comments made Wednesday night by David on TBS’ Conan.

“He said to Conan O’Brien that dressing as a nun in the film makes it easy to understand why nuns are ‘so mean,’ “ Donohue said. “He explains: ‘You know, the outfits might have something to do with that. Forget about the fact that they never have sex. If you give me a chance of no sex or having to wear that outfit the rest of my life, I would definitely take the no sex.’”

Donohue’s statement included the e-mail address of a top Fox executive.

9997: WTF DDB NY.

DDB NY demonstrates extraordinary cultural cluelessness with this PSA hyping safe sex to seniors. Could there possibly be a more irrelevant—and downright ignorant—way to communicate to the audience? DDB NY CCO Matt Eastwood said, “It was important for us that our creative response felt empowering to the 55, 60, 65+ demographic. Whether the younger generation likes it or not, our grandparents are having sex. We wanted to make a sexy ad that maintains a level of tastefulness and encourages seniors to enjoy their sex lives—safely.” Yo, douche bag, you failed miserably. The spot feels like the perverted fantasy of a drunken frat boy. Oddly enough, the key creatives responsible for this shameful shit are women. Somebody sign up these assholes for The Pitch. And why is the Black granny depicted with multiple partners?

9929: Mulatas And Gringos.

The headline for this Brazilian ad reads, “While the mulata’s feet samba, the gringos dance with their fingers in the air.” Guess the advertiser knows their tourists—and knows what they’re looking for.

9875: R.I.P. Miller Lite “Man Up” Campaign.

MultiCultClassics has never been a fan of the Miller Lite “Man Up” campaign or the lame agency behind it. So it’s great to hear the brewer is moving on to a new—albeit recycled—concept. The iconic brand has lost its way. Indeed, the latest shit from Draftfcb almost reflects how Miller Lite seems to be questioning its own manhood. The original “Great Taste…Less Filling” campaign featured ex-athletes and characters that appealed to men on more direct, honest and entertaining levels, successfully positioning lite beer as a legitimate and even masculine alternative. That is, real men drank Miller Lite. But in recent years, the work has been trying too hard to hang with the guys. The most obscene part about the “Man Up” campaign was the depiction of women. While Miller Lite, like just about all beers, has traditionally pushed female sexual stereotypes to lure men, the Draftfcb spots managed to make the insulting and condescending women appear downright unattractive. Check out the contrasting images below of Miller Lite bra-busting hotties versus “Man Up” ball-busting shrews.

If this Bosch ad had been produced for the U.S., would the Darwinian chart have included slaves and Black maids?

Plus Model magazine shows beautiful, naked women displaying their ample curves

Pictures show the heavier models with the skinny women usually favored by fashion magazines

By Nina Mandell / New York Daily News

One New York magazine editor is looking to help fashion gain a little weight.

PLUS Model Magazine, a virtual publication aimed at larger ladies, is making waves with a provocative photo spread.

The eye-popping shots show nude plus-sized models hugging runway models in this month’s issue. The point: Decrying the shrinking size of the women who work in the modeling industry.

Models have shrunk to 23% smaller than the average American woman. The disparity was 8% two decades ago, the mag said.

Plus-sized models are also getting tinier. Madeline Figueroa-Jones, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, said the fashion industry had leaned toward plus-sized models wearing a size 6, making it impossible for normal-sized women to pick the right outfit.

“This is not a health issue, this is about fashion,” said Figueroa-Jones, a former plus-sized model who lives in Battery Park.

Major magazines rejected the photo concept, Figueroa-Jones said, but Katya Zharkova and photographer Victoria Janashvili kept pushing to find a home for the images.

“They said we love them, but we can’t run them,” the edgy editor said.

The series seems to have hit a nerve. “We’ve gotten some negative comments like we’re advocating eating disorders, it looks like porn, but the majority of comments – even the ones we got this morning from Norway, Australia, Malaysia, husbands and even teens – are overwhelmingly positive,” she said.

Plus-sized women across the country have flocked to the magazine’s Facebook page to cheer for the campaign.

“I love what you are doing for our community!!” one fan wrote. “Its about time that the fashion world sees what opportunities they are missing!”
